The Mississippi Valley Poetry Contest began in 1972 and has grown to become a premier contest in the U.S.  Our mission is to encourage the writing and appreciation of poetry.

Adult General Category

1st Prize of $125.00

2nd Prize of $100.00

3rd Prize of $75.00

Student Awards

High School Award of $25.00

Junior High School Award of $25.00

Elementary School Award of $25.00

Special Categories

1. Mississippi Valley:  Poems best describing any aspect in the present.  Award of $25.00

2. Senior Citizen:  Poems on any subject by any poet 60 or over.  Award of $25.00

3. Religious:   Poems on any religious theme.  Award of $25.00

4. Humorous:  Any form of humor.  Award of $25.00

5. Haiku:  Best poem in this style.  Award of $25.00

6. Rhyming:  Poems on any subject.  Award of $25.00

7. Ethnic: Any aspect of ethnic culture, customs or history.  Award of $25.00

 

If you do not choose to enter one or more of the special categories mark your entry "Adult General."

 

Poetry Contest Rules

1.  All poems compete for the grand prize.

2. Each poet submits, from one to five poems, for a fee of $8.00.  Student fee is $5.00.

3.Poems entered in the contest must not have been previously published.  Do not submit the same poem in more than one category.

4. Adults must type each poem.  Place your name and address in top left-hand corner of page.  IMPORTANT: In the top right-hand corner list the category you are entering (such as "Adult General.") Clip together poems of more than one page.

5. Students print grade and school as of September of the year in which you are entering.  IMPORTANT: Students enter up to five typed or written poems only in their student category.  The Student fee is $5.00.  Students are K-12.

6.  Include fee (cash or check) with poems you submit.  Fees help defray costs of printing, mailing, advertising and other expenses.

7. Mail poems to Mississippi Valley Poetry Contest, (M.V.P.C.) P.O. Box 3188, Rock Island, IL 61204.

8. The entry deadline is April 1, 2006.

9. Winners will be notified in advance of Awards night.

10. Each poem submitted will be read and examined for style and content at least twice.  Eventual winning poetry undergoes several readings.

IMPORTANT:  When requesting rules or asking that a list of winners be sent, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
