Founded thirty years ago by David Collins and Evelyn Witter, the Midwest Writing Center offers opportunities for writers and readers alike throughout the Quad Cities region. This online site serves as an information gateway to literary events and writing resources throughout eastern Iowa and western Illinois, with services for emerging and established writers.

January 10th at7:00 p.m., current Quad-City Poet Laureate, Kathleen Lawless Cox, will be the featured reader at Out Loud Plus.

January 25 at 7:00 p.m. local author Julie McDonald will lead a discussion of her book The Heather and the Rose. 

January 26 at 6:30 local author JoAnna Lund will speak about her book When Life Hands You Lemons, Make Lemon Meringue Pie:  Seven Healing Recipes for Living (And Thriving) with Cancer.   The book will be available for sale and signing with proceeds going to MWC and the Discovery Shop.

 

The First Midwest Writing Center Awards Banquet will be held March 11 at the Outing Club in Davenport, Iowa.  This first banquet is being held in honor of the Midwest Writing Center's 25th Anniversary.   The guest speaker will be Beverly Van Hook, author of the well- known children's Super Granny series.  Local writing groups will also honor distinguished members.  Reservations are $30 per person and will be accepted from January 30th through February 27th.  Space is limited. Reservations should be sent to MWC at 225 E. 2nd St., Suite 303, Davenport, IA 52801   The banquet is in part made possible with the support of First Midwest Bank.

The David R. Collins Literary Achievement Award will be presented for the first time at the March 11 banquet.   The award is named after the founder of the Midwest Writing Center.  Nominations from the public will be accepted from January 17th to February 13th.  Please mail, email, or fax nominations to the contact information on the left.   

The following are criteria for the award:  The recipient must be a published author; be a member of a local writing group; live in Rock Island, Henry or Mercer counties in Illinois or Scott, Muscatine, or Clinton counties in Iowa; must promote writing and literacy; and must be helpful to other writers and readers.
