Online Workshops

 

The Midwest Writing Center invites participants to register for Creative Writing Basics, its two-part online writing workshops to be offered throughout 2012. The first offering of Creative Writing Basics I starts February 4th and Basics II follows on March 3rd.

 

Online Workshop Format

The online workshops are offered in a four-week, facilitated course format with one hour of live discussion each week. The day/time of the live discussion is determined with the workshop participants during the first week of the course. Please note that the online workshops have the following system requirements: Email access and broadband internet access with one of the supported browsers (Internet Explorer 6.0 and above; Netscape 7.1 and above; Mozilla 1.3 and above; and Firefox 1.0 and above.) Skype is used for real-time text conferencing.

 

 

About the online workshop facilitators

Julia Coleman is a freelance writer living and working in Florida. From sports to feature writing to white papers to ecourse content, she has an expansive writing repertoire.  Her sports writing career began in 2007 covering the University of Central Florida Women’s basketball team and now covers sailing, professional beach volleyball, NCAA Division 1 football and women’s tournament basketball, and more. She is south-Atlantic Region Sports Editor for Sportspagemagazine.com. Her publication credits include many periodicals and web/media content for a variety of organizations. She is currently at work on a novel.

 

Jodie Toohey lives in Davenport with her husband, two kids, cat and dog. She runs her own business, Jodie Toohey Writing Innovations, which offers writing and editing services. She is also attending classes to earn her MBA and volunteers for the Midwest Writing Center. In 2008, she published a book of love poetry aimed at pre-teen and teen girls, Crush and Other Love Poems for Girls. She is currently circulating two young adult novels through agents and publishers and is researching her third. Jodie recently won first place in the Bettendorf Public Library's Love Poetry Contest, will have two entries published in the forthcoming in MWC’s Creative Writing Primer and her poetry chapbook is set for release in the spring of 2013.

 

 

2012 Creative Writing Basics I and II offerings

 MWC101 Creative Writing Basics I                                                                     Facilitator: Julia Coleman

This online writer’s workshop is for the novice to intermediate writer of any genre who desires to fortify a fundamental foundation for his or her creative writing practice. Elements of voice and individual style, precision, technique, observation and research, along with customizing a writing environment, will be explored.

Basics I is offered:

MWC201 Creative Writing Basics II: Voice & Style                                            Facilitator: Jodie Toohey

This workshop is for the beginning to intermediate creative writer who has completed Creative Writing Basics I (formerly known as Basics for Beginners) or has a foundational understanding of basic creative writing conventions including voice, style, precision, technique, environment and the creative process. Basics II further explores the conventions of voice and style as a journey of discovery of these elusive qualities that are unique to each workshop participant.

Basics II is offered:

May 5 – June 1

July 7 – Aug 3

Sept 8 – Oct 5

Nov 3-30
